✨ Crafting Light – The Story of Ayesha

Ayesha discovered stained glass not through tradition, but through curiosity.

Years ago, while browsing a local community center’s notice board, a flyer about an art and materials reuse workshop caught her eye. One of the modules was titled simply: β€œGlass that Glows.”

That title lingered in her mind longer than the actual workshop β€” which she ultimately missed. But the idea stayed. With no prior background in glasswork, she began teaching herself β€” reading online, reaching out to international craft forums, and experimenting with broken glass bottles in her courtyard.

β€œI didn’t have a glass cutter or a studio,” she laughs. β€œJust the sunlight and whatever I could find at home.”

Her early pieces were fragile β€” literally and metaphorically. But slowly, she learned how to balance design with durability. She taught herself the copper foil method and basic soldering. What began as a hobby to brighten up corners of her home became a quiet passion.

Her breakthrough came through word of mouth. A neighbor asked her to create a stained glass lampshade, and from there came commissions for cafes, home dΓ©cor stores, and even small mosques. Her specialty became custom stained glass inserts for window frames and repurposed wood panels β€” rich with motifs inspired by nature and Mughal tilework.

What makes her work special is not just the craftsmanship, but the feeling each piece carries.

β€œGlass teaches you patience,” she says. β€œIt cracks if you rush it. It rewards silence. And when the light hits it just right, it tells a different story every hour.”

Today, Ayesha runs a modest but respected home-based studio in Rawalpindi. She also mentors young women interested in exploring stained glass as a creative or part-time livelihood.

Her workspace is filled with shards of possibility β€” blues, ambers, deep emeralds β€” waiting to be fused into something meaningful.

Through every curve, cut, and colored pane, Ayesha not only reshapes glass β€” she reframes the narrative around women in craft. Not followers of tradition, but quiet innovators building new ones of their own.
